MSS 12 on William Shakespeare

Since Shakespeare was our main topic in 12/1, we gained a lot of insight knowledge and would like to share it with you. For example we dealt with the tragic comedy „A Midsummernight’s Dream“, which portrays the adventures of four young lovers and a group of amateur actors. They interact

with fairies, a duke and a duchess. Based on the gained knowledge we analyzed the different characters and their relations to each other.

Another topic we dealt with were Shakespearean Sonnets. Each of our students had to analyze, interpretate, learn it by heart and finally present it in class.

Here is an example of a sonnet about a modern day subject, written by one of our students, Anna Eufinger: „The Cellphone“ and how important it is especially for our generation – sometimes too important.

Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?
Thou are more lovely and more temperate
Your soft screen and darling tones,

But summer’s lease has all too short a date:

Sometimes your battery is fading
Some times too hot the eye of heavens shine
Then your programs stop to work and thou are futile for a time.
But thy eternal summer shall not end
Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow’st
My love to you will not go away,
Not even if a new invention raises
I swear by the moon and the stars in the sky,
I will be faithful all the time
Neither friendship nor event may isolate us
As long as thy camera works and thy processor is fast
As long as this lives and this gives life to thee

We learned much about Shakespeare’s writing style and the way of presenting. He conveys with the use of an intimate and emotional language. He produced many highly-praised stories of human drama, comedy and romantic sonnets. His work continues to influence writers to this day. Relatable characters you can easily identify with are created by him. For example he portrays several types of women in his tragedies and plays in general. They influence other characters, but are also often underestimated. Women in Shakespearean plays have always had important roles, sometimes the leading role. Wether they create the main conflicts and base of the plays, or bring up interesting moral and cultural questions, they are put in challenging situations. Some women are stronger than other and their effect on the play is different for each one. They often surpass the male heroes.

These subjects gave us an interesting inside-view into Shakespeare’s life and actions. We learned much about being creative and open-minded. As a reward for the work we invested, we had the chance to see the „Midsummernight’s Dream“ live on stage. That was very impressive and brought us a little bit closer to one of the greatest poets and dramatists – William Shakespeare.
